Esmeralda County Repository Oversight Program
Esmeralda County is traversed by U.S. 95, a major north/south link between Las Vegas, Nevada to the south and Reno, Nevada to the north. The corridor is utilized in the movement of goods by truck. The corridor is also utilized by vacationers traveling north and south, seasonally in nature and direction.
Currently, the Department of Energy is determining how high-level waste will be transported to the Yucca Mountain repository site. There are several alternative highway and rail routes under consideration, many of which pass through Esmeralda County. If a route is chosen that passes through the County, then it will obviously have a greater impact than a route located away from the area.
