Esmeralda County Repository Oversight Program
Economic effects if the proposed Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste facility
is licensed and construction begins Esmeralda County
workers could be employed because of site characterization, then there
may be a boost in the local economy. Resident employment might result
in an increased demand for consumer goods and services. This may create
a need for new businesses and may reduce some of the economic leakage
currently experienced within Esmeralda County, particularly in the retail
sector. It may even create induced nonbasic employment opportunities.
Local businesses in the construction industry may also benefit due to
local construction or by competing for bids on government contracts.
They may increase their business by providing materials and/or services
for the Yucca Mountain project.
