Esmeralda County Repository Oversight Program
The Nuclear Waste Policy Act, enacted by the United States Congress in 1982 reflects concerns related to the storage and disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and other high level radioactive wastes (HLRW). This act and its amendment directed the U.S. Department of Energy to study Yucca Mountain, Nevada, for its suitability as the nation's first deep geologic repository for SNF and HLRW.
